Initial assessment.

When you come for your first treatment I will take a confidential case history. This will enable me to discuss any symptoms you may have, & also to check your general health background for any contraindications to sports massage. Each treatment is tailored to the individual & the initial assessment helps me to provide you with a professional service specific to your needs.

What are contraindications?

These are reasons why sports massage may be an inappropriate treatment, or reasons why I may have to take particular care on certain areas of your body. Some examples of contraindications are tumours, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), recent surgery or illness, infectious skin diseases & blood disorders. These will be checked & discussed before we proceed.

What shall I wear?

It is up to you as to which parts of your body are included in the massage. As I use my hands & arms in conjunction with an oil or lotion to perform massage these areas do need to be unclothed. However towels are used to cover you & your modesty is considered at all times. Normal underwear is fine & some people like to wear a pair of shorts. Ladies should wear a bra that is easily unclipped so I may get to their back muscles. It is also advisable to tie long hair back so it doesn’t get in the way.

Pre- or post-event massage may be carried out fully clothed.

How long will it take?

I usually offer massages of 30 or 60 minutes duration. If it is your first visit we will need 1 hour as I need to take a case history as well as give a treatment. After that, 1 hour is generally suitable for a full body or remedial massage. 30 minutes is usually suitable if you need me to concentrate on a specific area such as the neck & shoulders.

Are there any after effects?

You may feel tired after the massage so it is recommended that you don’t go & do anything vigorous. Your muscles may also feel as if they have had a work-out or even feel slightly bruised if the massage has been very deep. This is normal & should go away over the next couple of days.

It is recommended that you drink plenty of water after your treatment to help flush out any toxins I have encouraged to move. If not you may feel dehydrated or have mild constipation.
